Paul

My friend, the beautiful and talented Susan J. Paul crossed over on July 19, 2010, after a hard fought and spiritually charged, 7 year battle with ovarian cancer. It has been such a privilege to have known her and worked with her over the years. Our individual musical styles may not seem a match (hers: breathy, jazzy, poetic, “of the air”, mine: rootsy, twangy, “of the earth” – but somehow I think it worked.
I have been a fan of Susan’s since the first day I met her. Her friend made her sing to me in the ladies room of the Windrose in Long Beach (I was playing in a cover band at the time). She was severely shy, beyond anything I ever knew…and I was a really shy kid myself. But when she closed her eyes and sang, she was transformed. Her voice was absolutely gorgeous, and I’d never heard anyone quite like her. I told her that my brother (our lead guitar player) was starting a small record label and needed to hear her. I think she knew that and was trying to muster up the courage to play for him. We sat around on the sofas after the gig and Susan played a few of her songs. The rest you can read in her music bio.

Susan saw herself as an “artist” and not so much a songwriter in the sense that others would sing her songs. I know she was both, and believe time will prove me right. Actually, Susan was probably the only one who would disagree with me on this.

I’m honored to be among the musicians playing at Susan’s Memorial Celebration of Life this Tuesday, Aug. 3rd in Long Beach.

Read more: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=112603249&blogId=537717468#ixzz0wFAy04OZ

Rockabilly Bug

Davie's Song, "Rockabilly Bug", a tribute to early rock and rockabilly legends, got airplay this month on Rockin' Boy Saloon radio show!
The chart can change everyday, but for this moment, on this day, #6 is pretty cool.

We're also looking to book one or two more shows, perhaps a house concert, that week in the Sayreville/central Jersey area. Hit us up if you have any ideas and we'll let you know if and when we confirm anything.

And recently, Sweet Alyssum's version of my song The Feeling of Home, featuring Midge on lead vocal, was licensed with a music placement company. Thanks for doing a great job, sis. The same company previously picked up Doghouse Flowers.

see ya soon,

Had a blast playing with Rudy Jones and Lily McCabe at the bakery on Sunday afternoon. Thank you Players, Flour Fusion and all the old and new Friends who stopped by to hang out & catch some new tunes. It was great catching up with You!

If you missed the show, here’s a little about the players who joined me:

Rudy Jones from Carlsbad treated us to a set of his original songs and I had fun trying to keep up with him on a few. The crowd loved his "Bakersfield with an edgy blues" sound. The man can write, sing and play a mean guitar! I’m thrilled to have met him (thanks to John Quint) and can't wait to work with him again. Rudy is working on a new CD and website so check his links for the latest.

I’m so glad the extremely talented Lily McCabe joined us on fiddle. She’s a young performing musician with skills way beyond her years. She also teaches violin in the Temecula area. Lily’s new band with Wayne Cameron Swift Pony is debuting in southern California and headed for great things.

My friends Krista and Brandon Palacio got a warm welcome as they stepped in to perform a few of their new songs. The combination of Krista’s vocals and this pair’s style of writing is seriously knocking me out. They’ll be performing again at the bakery on March 26th at the Friday Night Writers Showcase.

Before we packed up, we had one more treat from singer/songwriter Phillip Jaye. Although he’s new to the area, Phillip is already making a stir in the local music scene hosting Acoustic Café nights at Flour Fusion and volunteering at the non-profit Musicians Workshop in Temecula. We hope he’ll soon be performing his songs with us at an upcoming FNWs showcase!

I'm proud to promote these artists so hit them up if you want to find out where they're playing and what they're up to!
Next Jaron Eldon stepped in and was terrific. He was joined on fiddle by the lovely and super talented Lily McCabe. She'd never heard his songs before, but that didn't seem to matter at all. She played brilliantly, she's amazing and only 24!

My set was next and my friend John Quint joined me, singing harmony with what I like to call his "world class voice". And if that wasn't enough, Lily joined me on fiddle too! What a treat - and no, she hadn't heard my songs before either. Didn't seem to matter one bit.

Tim Moyer came back to finish the night with another great set joined by Lily, Jaron, Stephen Cope, Wayne Cameron, and even John came up to sing backup. How cool was that!

For those who came out to support me, I am so grateful and so lucky. For those who missed it, you gotta check out Tim's Wednesday Night "thing" if you're in the Temecula area.

Across Another Sea...

<IMG style="WIDTH: 432px; After a long pause, he followed his opening line with some of the best business advice I've gotten just about anywhere. He said, "It's who knows you!"

So Steve Bloch, here I go again, making a little noise, splashing the water, making a few ripples.
Clearly, in the case of Davie Gayle, you can take the girl out of the city but you can’t take the country music out of the city girl. Born and raised in New Jersey, she grew up on a diet of country music, courtesy of her guitar playing, country and western band member father. However, the kind of country that Davie Gayle plays can’t be taught, it is sheer, raw, natural talent that fuels AMBER IN THE CLAY. And it’s when she stays closest to country’s roots that she’s at her best on this album. Doghouse Flowers has the same wildness of spirit that was the hallmark of Emmylou Harris in her Hot Band prime. Gayle also shares other qualities with Harris, she has the same ability to cut through a song like a knife through butter and she can break your heart with Buried Alive and 3:09, make it soar again with Get Me and then get your feet stompin’ with Rockabilly Bug. In its own sweet way this album is a bit of a rollercoaster, albeit a gentle one. What’s more, she can do what all great country artists can, make you yearn for places you’ve never been, or are likely to go, Sunnyside Café and Roundabout are those small, personal moments that can make an album shine.

The love of country-rock that saw Gayle and her brother Michael leave New Jersey for Southern California is strong. The title track is a thoughtful and winding song, with depths not often found while Get Me is a definite crowd-pleaser. However, Channel To You is a bit of a fish out of water, Gayle takes the song just a touch too far along the road towards commercial pop for it to sit completely comfortably. However, any blemishes are minor and quickly forgotten as the album drives relentlessly on. AMBER IN THE CLAY may be one of those gems that don’t make fortunes but Davie Gayle will be able to look back at it with a justified sense of pride." -MM
